The Vice President and Acting President of CERTH, Dr. E. Bekiaris, in the opening panel of the EUCAD Conference

The Vice President and Acting President of CERTH, Dr. E. Bekiaris, participated today in the opening panel of the EUCAD Conference that takes place in JRC premises in Ispra, Italy and focuses on autonomous vehicle research in Europe.

During the discussion, he emphasized the importance of conducting further research to strengthen public trust (encompassing both safety & security aspects) in autonomous vehicles, especially those of Level 5, which will operate without a driver. In this context, he welcomed the significant related research currently underway, among others, by the projects AutoTRUST, AI4CCAM, CONNECT, and SELFY.

Another priority issue for their acceptance of autonomous vehicles concerns the need to highlight the fact that this technology doea not entail job losses (e.g., bus drivers, taxi drivers, delivery personnel, etc.), but rather has the potential to upgrade the quality of these professions. This perspective is strongly supported by findings from the SKILFUL and RESKILLING projects.

Finally, he stressed the pivotal role that public familiarity plays in the successful adoption of autonomous mobility highlighting the need for large-scale pilot trials involving fleets of autonomous vehicles of all types. He cited the SHOW project as a noteworthy example, during which approximately 300,000 passengers were transported in autonomous vehicles. Notably, user acceptance increased by an average of one point on a 0–9 scale following their experience (typically rising from 6 before use to 7 after). At the same time, CERTH (through HIT and ITI) is participating in the exhibition area of the Conference with booths for the RESKILLING, AutoTRUST, and ULTIMO projects.
